High School Clay Target League

Spring 2025 was another successful season for our high school trap teams that call Chaseburg Rod and Gun their home trap range. There were approximately 80 athletes competing from Central/Logan and Aquinas. Statewide there were 3428 registered athletes that participated. Like other sports, our schools are placed in conferences. Conferences are set at the beginning of each season, depending on the number of athletes competing on their school’s team. For an example, last year C/L was one of seven schools in their conference. There were 276 athletes in their conference alone. Because Aquinas had fewer team members, they were in a smaller conference. The season runs from the end of March until the end of May. All competition is down virtually, except for state and national tournaments. C/L finished 2nd in their conference and Aquinas finished 6th in theirs.

With the popularity of this sport, competition is becoming tougher every year, but we are proud to say we have among the best in the state competing on our teams. Between our schools, we had four of the top 100 shooters in the state. They were Aiden Shulze, Taylor Turner, Cole Hasburgh for C/L and Alexis Stupi for Aquinas. There were also several athletes who were within a bird or two from hitting that top 100 mark.  Aiden finished 1st overall in the conference for C/L. Taylor finished as top female in the conference. Alexis finished 3rd in the conference for Aquinas. Aiden had FOUR 50 straights during our regular season. Eliot Miles also had a 50 straight for C/L. Between the schools there were 16+ athletes that had 25 straights. C/L also had seven females place in the top 25 female division in the conference. C/L recognizes trap shooting as a letter sport. This past season the team had 24 athletes awarded letters. Aquinas does not recognize trap shooting as a sport, so they do not award any letters.

The state tournament is held in Rome WI the first part of June. All athletes are welcome to compete in the state tournament, if they participated every week during the regular season. Aiden Schulze took home TOP STATE HONORS after shooting a perfect 100 straight. Taylor finished second in the varsity female division. Alexis finished 35th for Aquinas highest score.

In July the Nationals are held in Mason MI. All athletes must qualify to participate at the national level. Athletes’ year end average is used to determine if they qualify. The league only allows 1800 of the nation’s very best athletes to compete. There also is a team competition where only 240 teams are allowed. C/L had 10 team members competing. Those competing were Taylor Turner, Faith Hellerud, Cole Hasburgh, Carter Beitlich, Benji Wood, Yeshiaih Yang, Aiden Shulze, Drew Hass, Josh Pepin and Aiden Martin. Alexis was Aquinas’ lone participant. TAYLOR, DREW, CARTER and AIDEN MARTIN are all LIFETIME MEMBERS of Chaseburg Rod and Gun. Josh Pepin and Aiden Martin moved on to the finals on Sunday. C/L team one (Taylor, Faith, Cole, Drew and Aiden S) also qualified for finals. Only the top 400 individuals and top 80 teams move on to the finals. The team finished nationals in 77th place, Aiden shot a 95 and finished 227th and Josh shot an 82 and finished 400th. Alexis also moved on. She shot a 96 which put her in 172nd place overall. She finished 19th in the female division.

Everyone is looking forward to the spring 2026 season. C/L competes on Monday evenings and Aquinas on Wednesdays. Start time is 5:00. Everyone is welcome to come and watch. You will be very impressed with these young individuals.

In 2025 the US High School Clay Target League set records once again, with 55,832 registered student athletes. This marks 31 consecutive seasons where records have been broken. It remains the safest high school sport, with no recorded injuries. These numbers would not be possible without the commitment of 11,350 coaches and staff members.

Both teams would like to thank Chaseburg Rod and Gun for all you do. Without the support of the club and all the many volunteers who help coach weekly, our teams would not exist. THANK YOU!!!
